An update! Over the past few months I have been working as a producer for a brand new magic show titled “It’s Magic, but is it Art”. After a successful sell-out run back home in Cyprus in June, we brought the show to the Edinburgh Fringe for a two-week run of shows. The fringe is now over and the city is on its way to being its normal, ever magical self.
As my time in Edinburgh nears its close, I can think of no better way to end this chapter than by having participated in this wonderful month of music, art, theatre, and laughter. I’m proud to say that I was part of the #edinburghfringe2023!
Our show starred Dimis Michaelides (pictured above to my left). In it which he effortlessly channels the archetypes encountered throughout the world of Art and Magic: The conjuror, the magician, the art critic, the philosopher, and the skeptic takes the audience on a journey to explore the changing meaning of art. His groundbreaking performance personifies what we seek in art through the whimsical medium of magic. I’m so proud to have been part of his vision.
Dimis, who wrote and developed this show, offered me the opportunity to work as a producer. I’m very glad I took up his offer and cannot possible enumerate just how many things I’ve learned doing this job! It’s been fantastic to work in the performing arts sector; I’ve met so many exciting new people and have become so much more confident in my own ability to plan and organise.
From the start, we had a blast putting on the show in Cyprus, working with Artos Foundation and the Mitos Centre of Performing Arts. In the UK, we were blessed to work with Paradise Green, a not-for-profit organisation made up of volunteers brought together by their love of performance and their desire to experience the Fringe. Thank you to all who helped this two-person team achieve so much!
The Fringe is a frantic, chaotic, often-times jarring spectacle that envelops this city for all of August. This month-long extravaganza brings together lovers of art, theatre, and music from around the world. Take a walk down the streets of the Old Town and you just feel the pulsing heartbeat of human creativity.
Alas, the Fringe is also an ever fashionable target for locals to diss. Yes, it can wreak havoc on Edinburgh’s infrastructure. Yes, it is bewildering to be faced with so much choice! (even more so if you’re putting on a show!) Yes, it can all be too much. But remember: From the travelling busker who grows their audience by performing in the street corner, all the way to established regular sell-outs whose works helps hundreds earn a living doing what they love, the Fringe offers opportunity to just about every creative professional there is.
It’s been great here in Edinburgh. I’ve lived in this beautiful city since 2018, when I left Cyprus to study my passion. After much growth & learning, ups, and downs, I’m moving across the central belt to Glasgow this fall; so, dear Edinburgh this not farewell, rather, see you again soon.
