Where Angels Fear to Tread is a folk horror film set in a remote village in the Scottish Highlands. It follows Roselyn, a woman haunted by a past abusive relationship who relocates to the area to work as a wildlife conservationist, hoping for isolation and a fresh start. Instead, she finds herself trapped in a community with a dark and dangerous undercurrent and must escape the sinister situation she has unknowingly stepped into.

Inspired by Scottish Kelpie mythology, the film explores cycles of domestic abuse and violence against women and animals, examining how hyper-masculinity and misogyny persist quietly within society. Horses run throughout the film as a central metaphor. Controlled, bridled, and beaten rather than free, they mirror Roselyn’s experience as a survivor and her ongoing fight to reclaim autonomy.

Blending Celtic myth with psychological horror, Where Angels Fear to Tread reclaims the monstrous feminine to reflect real world dangers that are often dismissed or ignored. In the UK, violence against women has been declared a national emergency, yet these stories are rarely represented on screen, particularly in rural settings. This film confronts that silence head on, using atmospheric and unsettling horror to tell a story rooted in truth and transformation.

We are shooting this film under the new production company Black Magpie productions - co-founded by the producer, director and writer of this film. The company was founded to create Scottish folk horror films in an anthology format; the films will speak to each other and centre around the themes of the female experience, Scottish folklore and nature.

Our fundraising goal of £2,500 goes directly into the practical costs of making the film safely and professionally. There is no excess built in; every contribution goes toward what appears on screen. The company will not be using any of the fundraiser to pay themselves, it will all simply go on making this story come to life.
