Aceras’s Website

About the project

In late 2024, my friend Flourentzos reached out to me with a simple request. He has been blogging for over a decade online using Google’s Blogger platform, which has steadily become more and more abandonded by the tech giant. The ask was simple; help me set up a new website to blog from.

Initially, I thought to build using Hugo, which is my preferred web framework. However, I realised very soon that for non-technichal users, Wordpress remains the best option. So we started building a website and now, it’s public!

Details

I chose WordPress as the content management system for several key reasons:

  • User-friendly interface for non-technical content creators
  • Rich text editor that makes formatting posts intuitive
  • Built-in media library for easy image and file management
  • Extensive plugin ecosystem for added functionality

The site was built with several key areas:

  1. Blog Section

    • Used the native WordPress post system
    • Implemented categories and tags for content organization
    • Added social sharing capabilities
    • Set up SEO optimization using Yoast SEO plugin
  2. Podcast Integration

    • Installed PowerPress plugin for podcast management
    • Created custom RSS feed for podcast distribution
    • Added embedded audio player for on-site listening
    • Integrated with major podcast directories (Apple Podcasts, Spotify)
  3. Multilingual Support

    • Implemented WPML plugin for Greek and English content
    • Created language switcher in the navigation
    • Ensured SEO compatibility across languages

The site uses a customized theme that prioritizes:

  • Clean, readable typography
  • Mobile-first responsive design
  • Fast loading times through caching and image optimization
  • Accessibility features

I also implemented security measures including:

  • SSL certificate
  • Regular automated backups
  • Security plugin for monitoring and protection
  • Custom login URL to prevent brute force attempts
